How to Draw a Pumpkin
A round harvest pumpkin has deep ribs, a curved woody stem, and a slightly flattened base. Study the uneven lobes and the stem's changing direction in a close view of this autumn fruit.
Start the lessonStage 1: Outline the Body and Stem
Sketch a wide oval with a slightly flattened base. Add a thick stem curving upward to the right, with a small oval at its tip.
Stage 2: Shapes
Draw a tall oval lobe at the front, with broad rounded sections on either side. Add shallow curves behind the stem and flare its base into the pumpkin.
Stage 3: Define the Ribs
Divide the broad side sections with long curves that bow outward from the stem toward the base. Refine the overlapping lobes around the top and the rounded dips along the bottom.
Stage 4: Shade the Finished Pumpkin
Shade the rib grooves and lower edges, leaving lighter areas across the bulging lobes. Add woody lines along the stem's curve and an uneven cut tip. Finish with fine surface texture and a soft ground shadow beneath the pumpkin.
