How to Draw an Acorn
An oak acorn rests with a textured cup around the base of its smooth pointed nut. Study the contrast between the scaly cap and the polished shell in a close view of this small autumn seed.
Start the lessonStage 1: Place the Acorn
Lightly sketch a tilted oval for the cap at the upper left. Overlap it with a larger rounded oval extending toward the lower right for the nut.
Stage 2: Shapes
Narrow the nut toward the lower right while keeping its tip rounded. Keep the cap as a broad tilted oval overlapping the nut.
Stage 3: Add Scales and Stalk
Draw staggered rows of overlapping scales across the cap. Add a short stalk leaning upper left with an oval cut end. Shape a small projecting tip at the lower right of the nut.
Stage 4: Finish the Pencil Drawing
Shade beneath the overlapping scales and add fine texture to the cap and stalk. Shade the nut darkest along its left and lower edges, leaving a broad highlight on the upper right. Complete the drawing with a soft cast shadow beneath the acorn extending to the left.
