How to Draw a Tree
A mature oak tree spreads an irregular leafy crown above a sturdy branching trunk. Study how the broad canopy and visible branch forks balance each other in this full view of a solitary tree.
Start the lessonStage 1: Place the Trunk and Canopy
Sketch five large overlapping ovals for the canopy, with one at the top and two on each side. Draw two gently curved trunk edges that widen outward at the ground.
Stage 2: Shapes
Divide the trunk into a tall central section and two spreading side limbs. Add smaller forks reaching into the canopy ovals, and extend the trunk base into broad, pointed roots.
Stage 3: Define Foliage and Branches
Replace the oval guides with uneven, rounded leaf groups, splitting the lower masses into smaller overlapping groups. Add slender branch forks beneath the leaves and refine the spreading roots. Draw an oval trunk knot and a few flowing bark lines.
Stage 4: Finish with Texture and Shading
Lightly shade the undersides of the leaf groups with short pencil strokes, leaving their tops light. Darken a few bark lines and the trunk knots, and deepen shadows along the trunk and branch forks. Shade between the roots and lightly across the ground to complete the sketch.
