How to Draw a Sunflower
A sunflower opens a ring of pointed petals around a broad seed-filled center. Study the contrast between the large central disk, the overlapping petals, and the wide leaves in this single-stem flower drawing.
Start the lessonStage 1: Lay Out the Flower
Draw a large tilted oval with a smaller oval inside for the flower’s center. Extend two gently curved lines downward for the stem. Place a leaf oval low on the left and another higher on the right.
Stage 2: Shapes
Block in broad petals around the central oval, using curved sides and pointed ends. Shape the leaf ovals into pointed leaves and connect them to the stem with short stalks.
Stage 3: Define Petals and Leaves
Refine the bloom into overlapping pointed petals with curved interior lines. Add serrated leaf edges, central veins, and branching side veins. Place small oval seed marks in curved groups across the left portion of the disk.
Stage 4: Finish the Pencil Drawing
Remove the remaining construction guides and fill the disk with dark seed marks curling around a dense center. Shade the disk’s rim and overlapping petal bases, adding fine strokes along the petals. Shade the leaves and stem while keeping the branching veins and a narrow stem highlight light.
