How to Draw a Rose
A garden rose opens above a short stem with two serrated leaves. Explore the curled inner petals and broader outer petals in a close view of one partly opened bloom.
Start the lessonStage 1: Place the Bloom and Leaves
Sketch a large tilted oval for the bloom and a curved stem guide beneath it. Place two smaller leaf ovals beside the stem, with the right oval higher than the left.
Stage 2: Shapes
Build broad overlapping petals around a cupped center with a tilted oval opening. Give the stem two edges and a rounded cut end. Shape the leaves into pointed ovals and connect them to the stem with short stalks.
Stage 3: Define Petal Curls and Leaf Edges
Draw nested curls in the flower's center and refine the folded, gently wavy petal edges. Add the pointed leaflike shapes beneath the bloom and a small thorn on the stem. Give both leaves toothed edges, a central vein and branching side veins.
Stage 4: Finish the Shaded Rose
Shade beneath overlapping petals and inside the curled center, leaving the turned rims pale. Add fine curved strokes across the petals and smaller branching veins across the shaded leaves. Shade the pointed shapes beneath the bloom and the stem, preserving a narrow stem highlight.
