How to Draw an Eye
A human eye is framed by natural eyelids and a short section of eyebrow. Explore the iris, lid thickness, and small shadows around the eye in a close view with a relaxed expression.
Start the lessonStage 1: Place the Eye and Brow
Lightly sketch a wide oval for the eye. Above it, outline a long, curved eyebrow with a rounded left end and a tapered right tip.
Stage 2: Shapes
Refine the oval into an almond shape with pointed corners. Make the upper edge more arched than the lower edge, keeping the curved eyebrow outline above.
Stage 3: Add the Eye Details
Draw a large iris tucked beneath the upper lid, a centered pupil, and a small circle for a highlight at its upper left. Add the small inner corner, a narrow lower lid rim, and a curved crease above the eye. Draw curved upper lashes, a few lower lashes, and sweeping eyebrow hairs.
Stage 4: Finish with Shading
Darken the pupil and iris rim, then add spaced strokes radiating through the iris while leaving the highlight white. Shade beneath the upper lid, along its crease, and around the inner corner. Erase remaining guides, strengthen the lashes and a few eyebrow strokes, and soften the lower lid shadow to finish the sketch.
