How to Draw a Volleyball
An indoor volleyball shows curved groups of panels across a softly shaded round surface. Explore how panel seams turn around the ball and how a small cast shadow suggests its weight against the ground.
Start the lessonStage 1: Outline the Ball
Lightly sketch a large circle in the center of the page. Use overlapping pencil strokes to establish its round outline.
Stage 2: Shapes
Draw two broad curves across the circle, joining the outline on each side. Bow the upper curve upward and the lower curve downward to frame a wide middle band.
Stage 3: Divide the Front Panels
Add curved side boundaries to narrow the middle band, removing its old extensions to the outer edge. Draw two curved horizontal seams inside it to form three front panels. Extend the side boundaries upward and downward to meet the circle.
Stage 4: Finish the Seams and Shading
Divide the top and bottom sections into three panels each, and add a long seam along each side section. Refine the outline and darken the seams, adding light pencil texture and shading that deepens toward the sides and bottom. Add a small, soft cast shadow beneath the ball to complete the sketch.
